How to Keep Your Pets Warm, Safe, and Healthy This Winter!

With winter in full swing, it’s not just humans bundling up, our furry companions feel the cold too. Whether you’ve got a couch-loving cat, a short-haired pup, or a snuggly small animal, it’s important to make sure they stay warm, safe, and healthy through the season.

Here are seven simple ways to help your furry friend feel cosy all winter long.

1. Layer Up

Some pets feel the cold more than others, especially smaller breeds or those with thin coats. A well-fitted jumper or jacket can make daily walks much more comfortable. Choose soft, breathable fabrics that allow for movement and play.

2. Set Up a Cosy Corner

Hard floors and chilly draughts can make nap time less inviting. Set up a warm, cushioned space for your pet to retreat to – think soft blankets, elevated beds, or even a heated pet mat (especially in older homes with less insulation).

3. Mind Their Paws

Morning frost, snow and damp surfaces can irritate sensitive paws. Keep their feet dry and check for cracks or irritation. A quick wipe after a walk goes a long way.

4. Keep Them Moving

Colder weather might mean fewer trips to the park, but pets still need daily exercise and stimulation. Try indoor games, puzzle feeders, or quick backyard play sessions to keep them active (and out of mischief).

5. Hydration & Nutrition

Even in cooler weather, pets always need access to fresh water. Some animals burn more energy staying warm, so check in with your vet if you’re unsure about portion sizes or winter diet tweaks.

6. Keep an Eye on the Temperature

If the house is chilly for you, it’s likely uncomfortable for your pet too. Keep indoor spaces warm, particularly overnight or when you’re out, and avoid placing beds near windows or tiles that can stay cold all day.

7. Know the Signs of Cold Stress

If your pet is shivering, becoming lethargic, or seeking warmth constantly, they might be struggling with the cold. Short-haired breeds, puppies, and senior pets often need extra support through winter.
